Syrian Jackal
'Souls Range
Eastern Mediterranean region from the coast of Lebanon between Beirut and Tripoli. See the Jackal Subspecies Map.
Appearance
This subspecies is closely related and quite similar in appearance to Canis aureus lupaster, but is usually more richly colored. It is also the smaller of the two subspecies, clearly distinguishable by size: it weights 11 - 27 lbs (5 - 12 kg) and has a length of 24 - 35 inches (60 - 90 cm).
Other Characteristics
Survival
This subspecies of jackal is quite humanized as well as adapted to that particular way of life; they are successful and quite prosperous. However, their range does overlap wolf subspecies ranges, and as the two are somewhat competitive, this subspecies is not the dominant one in its particular area. Typically Syrian Jackal relations with wolves are good, though thanks to the recent history of Jerusalem, there is tension in the air.
